Fuelling The Indian MRO Industry Growth With Simulated Training

India’s aviation sector’s current fleet stands at 731 aircrafts including commercial and cargo. Fleets include aircrafts from Airbus ,Boeing ATRs, Bombardier , Caravan and Dornier 228 as on 2023. With more than 1,000 aircraft currently on order means demand for 200–300 major maintenance checks annually. Replacing ageing aircraft in the fleets of several airlines also creates scope for MRO to meet redelivery contracts. India is also poised to become a large defence aircraft market, propelling demand for military MRO capabilities as well.

An airline’s expenditure in MRO accounts for 15% of total revenues — the second highest expense after fuel cost. However setting up an MRO business is capital-intensive and requires significant investment in infrastructure, materials, training of manpower, and technology. While investments are being made in setting up the infrastructure by Indian Aviation industry there is an immediate need for skilled manpower in the MRO industry

MRO companies like AIESL, Indigo , Airworks India , GMR AeroTechnik, AAR-Indamer Technics Private Limited have their bases in India and are managing the MRO Business currently , there is need for much more. Currently, the majority of the Indian MRO services are outsourced to countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates, which demonstrates a huge demand and low supply model domestically.

Setting up a robust Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry  is crucial for India for ensuring the availability and airworthiness of aircraft. In February 2024,  Government of Karnataka and Tata Group companies Air India and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for an investment of ₹2,300 crore. They plan to establish an aircraft Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Bengaluru airport and the  unit is expected to employ 1,200 persons.
